Ask the Expert
With the last question, we looked at what NEC Class 2 was and where it could be used. This week let's explore the "why" behind NEC Class 2 by asking "Why should I consider using Class 2 concepts when designing a control panel?"

Many North American control panels must be inspected to meet UL 508A, and listed as such. Most control and power circuits are subject to the associated design constraints. However, the nature of Class 2 energy limited circuits, devices, and wiring methods means they need not be evaluated for UL compliance, minimizing the design effort.
